Mint Mobile
Problem
Buying a SIM card during short trips can be frustrating for many people due to their size and fragility. While Mint Mobile is known for its affordable wireless plans, many people are unaware that the company also offers budget-friendly eSIM options. With eSIM technology becoming more popular, the challenge was to create an engaging advertisement that highlights Mint Mobile’s eSIM plans in a way that grabs attention and stays true to the brand’s witty, lighthearted tone.
To bring this message to life, I created a collage-style 2D animation with a comedic approach, aligning with Mint Mobile’s playful branding. Using dynamic cutout visuals, snappy edits, and Ryan Reynolds’ AI-generated voice (via Eleven Labs), I infused the ad with the humor and charm that Mint Mobile is known for. The narration delivered sarcastic yet informative lines, making the eSIM option feel not only convenient but also an obvious, no-brainer choice for budget-conscious users.

I realized that a collage style would align better with the company's vision than detailed graphic design. As it was my first attempt using collage style, the most important process was research: finding what styles make collage motion graphics seem well created. Low frame rates, choppy animations, less refined footage editing were examples of such techniques.
The main purpose of the advertisement is to emphasize the low cost compared to other companies while highlighting the benefits of eSIM plans. As a result, the video was designed to be an infographic motion piece, combining narration with graphic elements. Simple storyboards and style frames were created to provide an overview of the video's concept.

Early Storyboard and Styleframes
The initial simple designs were created to ensure they aligned with Mint Mobile's mood and were refined after successfully capturing the company's comedic tone. However, beyond the design elements, I also wanted to incorporate a more significant change into the video, to make it feel even more funny and creative.
That’s why I decided to use Ryan Reynolds’ voice as the narrator. As the co-owner and creative director of Mint Mobile, his involvement would add a personal touch, so I explored ways to capture his voice and discovered an AI voice-over program developed by Eleven Labs that can replicate anyone’s voice using source footage.
The first attempt involved writing a script and letting the AI program narrate it. While the voice closely resembled Ryan's, the acting didn’t quite capture the authenticity or tone I wanted. There were also some unnecessary pauses, glitches inside the rendered voice. So, I decided to use a different feature of the program that allowed me to perform the voice acting myself. After recording my own voice reading the script for the infographic motion video, I converted it to sound like Ryan’s voice and incorporated it into my design. This process involved multiple attempts, as I made mistakes such as mispronouncing words. Eventually, I was able to find the best recording to use in my designs.
